Skulls & Skeletons
January 27 / 2019, saw the NHSM filled with a standing-room-only crowd, eager to see the exhibits and hear the talks by Gene Meyer and Tim Hoen on Skulls and Skeletons.
While Gene covered most of the scientific details concerning the specimens, Tim spoke of how to prepare the skeletons: fun things like getting rid of tissue without grossing out your family and neighbors, what NOT to use, and ways to display them.
As NHSM's Associate Curator of Paleontology, skulls and teeth are of special importance to me, as this is what first differentiated the Synapsid proto-mammals from the Reptiles, when their evolutionary lines separated in the Early Permian geologic period.
