Rumex crispus (curly dock). This rather humongous weed (actually a medicinal herb) started growing at the front of Beverly's and my Chase MD home in mid April 2017. Properly prepared and in small doses, Remex crispus can be used as a mild laxative, or as a salve for the skin. http://naturalmedicinalherbs.net/herbs/r/rumex-crispus=curled-dock.php
A number of my "Bug" captures come from the small area of marsh grass behind the house. As you can see,
it's not all that extensive. In addition, during the Spring season, it's home to a population of Green Frogs.

Taken the other day at Piney Orchard Nature Preserve in Anne Arundel County, MD. The posture is called "obelisking." --->
"The thermoregulatory behavior of some dragonflies, where the abdomen is pointed into the air as the dragonfly is perched. This usually occurs on hot days, and is thought to decrease the solar insolation by reducing the surface area exposed to the sun."

Robber Fly (Diogmites neoternatus)
These predatory insects are also called assassin flies. They feed mainly on other insects and as a rule, they wait in ambush and catch their prey in flight. There are over 7000 species worldwide. They are especially prominent in the American southeast. I captured this one this past July, in the area of marsh grass behind my house, which is located just south of Baltimore County's Marshy Point Park. |
Fragile Fork Damselfly (Ischnura posita) There are a lot of damselflies around here (Chase MD), which is probably the reason why there are not that many houseflies. They are as voracious a predator as their larger dragonfly cousins. I caught this one as it was feasting on what looks like a lacewing. |
I had a house guest the other day (Scutigera coleoptrata), perched on the ceiling above my door.
I wonder if that's a sign of good luck :)

I never knew that Mayapples were so inquisitive. The second I took out my camera,
they came in from all directions ...
