Feelings Rather Then Facts
I've been participating in political debate for close to 15 years. There's nothing wrong with legitimate criticism. In fact, it's a hallmark of democracy.
However, there's grown this mindset that seems to protest just for the sake of protest. As I mentioned, it's rather egocentric. There are posts and pages like this all over FB. These are based on feelings rather then facts.
A few months ago, Time Magazine discussed this issue in regard to the Anti-Vaccine movement, saying that even though most of these types were intelligent and well educated, they labor under the delusion that they know more then scientists, researchers, and doctors.
“How stupid do these jokers think we are?” - That, in a nutshell, reflects what’s going on. Just like with the Anti-Vaccine movement, these people suffer an affliction whereupon they believe their opinions to be actual facts. In essence, you, a member of the proletariat, are indeed stupid.
Most of my arguments haven’t been about converting to a different political philosophy, but an attempt to see the world objectively.
I love Orwell because he writes about this as being a necessity if we are ever going to stop fighting against each other, and work to solve common problems. He points to “Intellectual Dishonesty” of leftist politics as being a major stumbling block to this end, and cites examples throughout his essays.
And as for the comments about Pope Francis being a "Marxist." Christians need to remember that Jesus spoke about tending to the needy. His parable about it being easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle then a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, shows that he meant what he said, no excuses allowed. At least for now, I feel that that is what is driving Francis, and not political aspirations.
