"Advocates called the guidance "ludicrous" and say it will dampen urgent climate discussions."
It was my background in Historical Geology that helped me become a curator of paleontology for the Natural History Society of Maryland.
It's very difficult to get the general public to understand what research is uncovering, because of the "Politicization of Science."
The trouble of course, are egotistical, know-it-all big mouths.
On the one hand, there are those who claim there is no threat from climate change, while on the other, all climate change is due to human activity.
I find the latter group particularly offensive, because their orthodoxy is such that they classify genuine research as being "Denial" if it doesn't strictly conform to their doctrine.
The organization "Skeptical Science," not only has misinformation and incorrect assumptions, they have a black list where they've named legitimate scientists as offenders.
The last time this nation saw political black lists was during the McCarthy Era, when countless careers were compromised, based on the charge of being a "Communist."
What research shows is that climate sometimes changes quickly. When the latest world-wide glaciation began to end some 11,000 - 12,000 years ago, Earth's climate would sometimes swing from temperate to glacial, back and forth, in intervals of less then ten years.
Further research reveals that since the latest Ice Age began some 2.5 million years ago, there may have been up to 20 glaciations with corresponding warming periods.
Each one of these has its own unique series of extinctions. When the planet warms, ice sheets disappear. The range of warmth loving species expand, while that of cool loving species shrink. They either adapt or go extinct. When the planet cools again, it's the reverse.
What marks this latest warming cycle, is human activity, especially runaway population growth, world-wide pollution, and rain forest / resource depletion.
What I find worrisome, is that even if we are able to master all the human caused problems, there's still the natural warming cycle.
Again, because of the stigma caused by the Politicization of Science, many aren't aware of this.
Even if warming weren't an issue, population, pollution, and depletion are, and must be confronted. At the same time though, we absolutely need to prepare for the inevitable natural change that's already on the way.
