The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office recently investigated a medical emergency that occurred in the 200 Block of Boutte Estates Drive in Boutte, LA involving a 17-year-old female juvenile.
During the course of the investigation, deputies learned that the patient had consumed a narcotic candy commonly known as “gummy edibles.” Gummy edibles are similar in appearance to gummy bears, gummy worms or other similar gummy candies, but gummy edibles are commonly laced or coated with THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that creates the “high” effect.
Some of the negative effects of THC edibles are psychotic episodes, hallucinations, paranoia, panic attacks, and impaired motor ability functions according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Sheriff Champagne urges parents to discuss the dangers of consuming any edible products that contain narcotics due to the fact that it is illegal in Louisiana and can be dangerous. In some states, individuals can purchase these edibles from licensed pharmacists, who are able to safely make them for medicinal purposes with a regulated amount of THC in each dose. Often though, edibles may be homemade with unregulated amounts of THC in each dose, causing varying effects between each consumption.
Regardless of the source of purchase, these items are currently ILLEGAL in Louisiana and anyone caught in possession of the narcotic infused edibles can be subject to legal consequences.
