Political Correctness - John Cleese
“If people can’t control their own emotions, then they have to stop trying to control other people’s behavior.” - B. F. Skinner
In this interview with comedian John Cleese, in regard to political correctness, he says "It starts off as a half-way decent idea, and then it goes completely wrong, and taken to the absurd.” He then continues with several amusing ethnic jokes.
It soon switches to a second, more serious interview, where he recounts things like the former head of the BBC as saying, “There are some people I would wish to offend.”
Cleese goes on to say, “I’ve been warned to not go to most university campuses, because the political correctness has been taken from being a good idea, which is let’s not be mean, particularly to people who are not able to look after themselves - to the point where any kind of criticism of any individual group, can be labeled cruel.”
“The point about humor, the point about comedy, is that all comedy is critical. If you start saying ‘Ooh, we mustn’t, we mustn’t criticize or offend them,’ then humor’s gone. With humor goes a sense of proportion. Then as far as I’m concerned, you’re living in 1984.”
