"Citizens initiative to regulate, tax marijuana fails to qualify"
While I have no objection to marijuana being used for legitimate medical reasons, that is, after first consulting a doctor, and then regular follow-up visits, for a couple of yeas I’ve been following a story that will be covered in part today on WBAL-TV News.
The issue is Big Business attempting to cash in on what it sees as a financially lucrative market, with little regard to an individuals’ health. For decades this nation has labored at countering the influence of Big Tobacco, its tactic of luring young people into the habit with the belief that smoking made you “cool.” For a time there were even TV commercials where doctors touted tobacco’s health benefits.
The dishonesty of Big Marijuana is no different.
An example of dishonesty was highlighted today in Maine, where an initiative to legalize marijuana failed to make the 2016 ballot. Over 47,000 signatures legalization proponents submitted in favor of the proposal were invalidated due to irregularities.
Over 31,000 of these were invalid because the signatures of petition circulators swearing that they witnessed signature collection did not match their signatures on file.
Another 13,525 signatures were invalidated because they did not belong to a registered voter in the municipality where they were submitted.
