JOLIET, IL — A 6-year-old Joliet girl died and a 29-year-old Joliet woman was airlifted to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries after police say a 34-year-old motorist was under the influence of drugs and disregarded a stop sign in Kendall County.
The little girl, identified as Lily Hicks, was taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, where she died of her injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The fatal crash happened around 11:50 a.m. at the intersection of Grove Road and Illinois Route 126. According to the Illinois State Police, Michael Kubistal was driving a 2015 silver Nissan Altima northbound on Grove Road and disobeyed the stop sign as he approached Route 126.
While state police said Kubistal lives in Joliet, Kendall County Court records show and jail bookings list an Oswego address in the 5000 block of Grove Road, about 3.5 miles from the crash site.
Police say Kubistal crashed into the driver's side of a 2015 black Chevrolet Malibu driven along Route 126 by 29-year-old Amme Hicks, also of Joliet. Hicks was airlifted to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to state police.
Police said 6-year-old Lily Hicks was ejected from the vehicle.
As for Kubistal, he was taken to an area hospital, and his injuries are not life-threatening, police said.
State police said Kubistal has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of marijuana, disobeying a stop sign, operating without auto insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Kendall County Court records also list charges including four counts of felony aggravated DUI resulting in death or great bodily harm.
Kubistal appeared in court Wednesday morning, according to court records.
