That is an excellent point.
Essentially, we are in a propaganda war, i.e, working to get people to think the way we want them to. To be successful, we need to present research and evidence that confounds all the misinformation.
Of course, once that happens, often there's a response based on immaturity and willful ignorance: denigration, cursing, etc.
It's like that joke, "How many psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb?" … Only one, but the lightbulb has got to want to change in the first place.
It’s very hard for people to see themselves objectively. That’s what the whole issue of Psychological Defense Mechanisms is all about: Justification, Rationalization, Denial, Projection, etc.
As being a part of human nature it is a tough nut to crack, but it can be done, though it usually takes years of effort with a trained therapist.
Communist “re-education (brainwashing)” is based on the same notion. However, instead of getting you to see the world objectively and without bias, as George Orwell recommends, the goal is to get you to see the world the way the party wants you to. This in part, is what 1984 is about.
And this brings us back to the issue of propaganda.
