"Conservatives don't support jazz"
~ “Conservatives don’t support jazz” ~
Or so I was told in a recent call, whose purpose was a request for me to remove a certain commentary from my page, where I happened to point out the inconvenient truth that an article placed on another particular Facebook page was an overt and obvious politically motivated lie.
My immediate thought was, “Well no wonder, you constantly patronize conservatives as being inferior, moronic, and stupid, and then wonder why they don’t support your efforts? DUH!!! ... but in order to keep the peace, I remained silent.
I did say though, that my recently deceased girlfriend Beverly, a conservative, did indeed support jazz, which produced: “No, she supported you, not the jazz. In fact, the only reason people come to see you is because it’s free (referring to Baltimore’s FreeFall concert series, which allows people to see all types of performing arts at no charge). Conservatives never pay to hear jazz.”
Thus in about a 10-second moment in time, this “intellectual” insults Beverly, my own artistic integrity, and many of my friends and fellow jazz performers.
This overt snobbery, which I find to be rife in modern progressive politics, is one of the reasons our nation is beset with so much animosity.
And I want to make this clear, it’s not the blacks in the jazz community that are causing this. By and large, I’ve found the black community to be very warm and welcoming to anyone who appreciates and desires to know more about the jazz experience. That’s the way to promote tolerance and understanding.
With regard to Beverly, I did introduce her to more contemporary stylings, but the fact of the matter is, she already had jazz in her record collection and could converse about Armstrong, Ellington, Ella, and others. Not only that, she also had country, pop and rock artists too - or to put it another way, she wasn’t a snob.
So at this moment, my mind is toying with the idea of having a “Conservatives Don’t Support Jazz” jazz concert sometime in 2018.
Wouldn’t that be a hoot.
Most important, it’d bring greater awareness to one of the underlying causes of the animosity that plagues our nation. After all, raising awareness of underlying issues is one of the things social activists are supposed to do :)
Just a thought ...
