If we are going to be as tolerant as we'd like to believe we are, we’ve got to stop blaming whites, the rich, blacks, the poor, Jews, Arabs, America, etc., etc., etc., for all the world’s problems. We have to set the example. It has to stop NOW, and it has to start with oneself. ~ gfs ~ 12/13/2013

I don't mind differing opinions, it's when people lose site of the fact that opinions are just opinions, and not fact. That's when the open exchange of ideas go out the window, and people who feel differently become the "enemy."
I witness this mostly in political discourse on Facebook. Rather then expressing their beliefs in their own words, a common trait I've notice about people who engage in this type of destructive behavior, is that they share these posts that denigrate whole groups of people as being inferior.
To me, it's no different then the perception in segregationist America that blacks were inherently lazy, or in 1930s Germany that Jews were an inferior race and not to be trusted.
No matter what guise it takes, Hate is Hate.
In my opinion, the genuine Progressive principle of Tolerance, as originally intended in Socialist idealism, offers a solution, that is, if people can ever be convinced change their egotistical perceptions of others.
If it were easy, the need for clinical psychologists would disappear.
In this system, everyone is included in the political decision process, except for perhaps criminals. While in a true democracy there are as many views as there are people, the key is to respect others as fellow human beings.
As Orwell, while it’s alright to HONESTLY criticize individuals or events, there’s no wholesale classification of groups of tens of millions of people as being “good or bad.”
Rather then animosity, the way to constructive discourse is opened. Rather then struggling against each other, people work together to solve common problems.
Genuine Progressive philosophy also recognizes that progress takes time. There are no bloody revolutions or attempts of one group to force there will onto others.
In order for this to work, Tolerance has to be applied straight across the board and not just when it’s politically convenient.
