Many have pointed out that we lost a great talent in Robin Williams. I don't understand any definition of the word "talent" unless it includes the ability to get up in the morning and bust one's tail, from early to late, day after day, and decade after decade, overcoming all rejection, disappointment and frustration with a relentless redoubling of effort. Where does that kind of drive come from? I guess that for Williams it was not in spite of his depression, but that his need for humor and silliness, and to be surrounded by laughing people WAS his battle against depression.
People have said that Williams lost his battle against depression. Many live a long life and die of natural causes, yet the disease of depression has taken their life. Williams produced an artistic body of work of a quality and quantity worthy of ten lifetimes. If that is not a crushing victory over depression, then I do not understand the word "victory."
