Gays as Alcoholics: Rick Perry
"At a Wednesday night event in San Francisco, Texas Governor Rick Perry managed the rare feat of willfully misunderstanding both homosexuality and alcohol addiction in one breath." - Newsweek
It's an unfortunate fact that in our society, because of free speech, we have to endure poorly thought out commentary like Rick Perry's. He doesn't grasp the fact that he's a politician and not a psychological expert on what motivates humans.
Whether coming from the left or the right, I have a hard time with statements from “holier-then-thou” types. There’s usually some kind of ulterior motive behind this, typically puffing up one’s ego at the expense of others. With Perry, it’s not to “help” gays, it’s to further his political ambitions.
The thing is, just like similar messages, veiled or overt, like the ones we’ve seen on Facebook, the main impact is to cause further divisiveness and animosity between people, who in the grand scheme of this, are really not that different from one another.
What’s curious about this intolerance is that it flies in the face of Christ’s messages about tolerance: Not to judge others, and to get one’s own act together before criticizing others.
Intolerance and hate know no political, ethnic, or racial boundaries. Personally, I feel that it’s the number one issue that will affect the future of humanity.
