This piece of limestone was collected along the C&O Canal, west of Hancock, MD. It reflects two separate depositional environments. Specimen has been cut with a rock saw to show inside details. The orange cast is rust that resulted when iron precipitated through cracks in the rock that had formed at a later time.

When visiting my mother in Florida during the mid 1980's, she took me to a nearby Dunedin Beach (Central Gulf Coast), where I discovered gobs of fossils littering the beach.
This is the Ocala Limestone Formation, an "extremely fossil rich grainstone,"which dates from the Eocene Epoch, 55 - 36 million years old. I've collected from Eocene beds along the Potomac River, near the bay, but they're not as good as this.

The specimens below were collected east of Honeygo Run in eastern Baltimore County,
near the intersection of Philadelphia Rd. and Cowenton Ave.
The red and grey clay are from the early Cretaceous Period, where sometimes dinosaur bones and plants fossils are found.
Underlying this is bedrock, represented here by gabbro (dark), and quartz diorite (light). These are igneous rocks formed
long ago, when our region was the site of active volcanism.
